‘Daal’ generally refers to ‘lentil curries’. We know that lentil and bean curries are bursting with healthy ingredients, but to most Indians, it is simply warming comfort food. In fact, a colloquial phrase for ‘meal’ is ‘daal roti’ - literally meaning lentil curry and bread.
The problem with making your own bean or lentil curry is the time it takes to soak and cook the lentils. Our daals come with a pouch of whole spices, the cooked lentils and a ‘tarka’ (a spiced sauce normally cooked separate to the lentils or beans and stirred in at the end) so you can have a delicious and healthy meal on the table in minutes.
We are also really proud that our daals won the Canadian Grand Prix Awards 2019 for best food product for the larder. We are biased, but we couldn’t agree more!
We love our daals as they are, wholesome and delicious but they also make a great cooks’ ingredient. In cooler months try adding vegetables and some stock to make delicious lentil soups. For special occasions, top with some crispy onions and a swirl of cream. You can also make delicious bean burgers with our channa/chickpea masala or crispy lentil cakes and even lentil-stuffed vegetables or breads.
